Absentism

I just realised I haven't posted in weeks. That's probably a lot to do with me never being online anymore when I'm at home ever since my laptop died a miserable death. Usually I post from work, but it's been a rollercoaster for 4 months straight, but I think we're nearing a temporary end now. I could use a bit of a breathing period.

Solon has been doing a few more showjumping courses and doing quite well. He's going to a huge show this weekend. Only downside is that his class on Saturday is starting at 8:00 am *yawn*.

Szep is doing great. He's just started teething now. He's a very good natured dog, always happy and quite well behaved. Quite surprising considering his breed(s). I think even the vet was impressed.

Storm and Sterre are suffering from a spring bug. Poor Storm was having a real hard time breathing. He's cleared up a little now and the whole family seems to be enjoying their time on the balcony. Little Sterre is still a brat though and scares me everytime she hops over to the neighbour's balcony.

Tonight I'll be seeing Nick Cave at the Heineken Music Hall, even though I kind of forgot about it, so really have to rush to get there.

Not a whole lot going on. I must be growing old and homely.

Tough deci$ions

In a way, it felt like I had won the lottery, but with a massive BUT to it.

I've had my horse for 6 years now. In that time, he's grown to be my buddy, my master in crime, most irritating beast ever and superduperbeastie. We've had wars and make ups, ups and downs, great rides and big falls.

And then someone came along last sunday, after seeing him jump an almost all clear with the words "Are you interested in selling him?". My initial instant response was "no way!". My friend told me not to say no right away, so I said we'd discuss it and get back to them. She's more savvy in the wheeling and dealing of horse business, so she caught up with the people later.

The situations was... a huge, HUGE sum of money to sell him to an international rider. I mean, we're talking brand-ne- middle-class-car-amount here. A lot of money for a 9 year old horse, who has never done anything in his life and can be very stroppy to boot.

So I had to consider it, and it was terrible. I didn't sleep most of the night, and was completely absent at work. Every hour my decision would change from "yes" to "no".

Now, all my more commercially inclined friends are calling me crazy, but I don't care, 'cause I'm still quite happy with my little pony Solon and he's going to stay with me for a little while yet.

But what a difficult decision to make...

Winter wonderland

This was the view from my balcony this morning. All the fog had frozen onto the tree's branches during the night, which made for a beautiful view. Then there was this very bright, low wintersun, which made everything just look beautiful and stunning. A lot of people went skating... I haven't been on iceskates in years and would probably just fall over if I tried. So I did all kinds of dull stuff. Bought a sander to finish up the work I'm doing in my kitchen, got home just in time to catch the postman, who delivered my skiing pants. They're wonderful and warm, and best of all, cheap! So today when I finally came around to going to the horse, I wasn't cold at all. Wonderful! Should have bought one years ago.

Anyway, pictures. The view from my balcony this morning.

And the beautiful roses in my living room. I get them from one of the glasshouses in the neighbourhood. They sell of the flowers that didn't quite make the grade real cheap, but I can't really see anything wrong with them. They're just stunning. Surprisingly enough, the cats haven't knocked them over yet either. Shocking.

And this is the area my horse lives in. This is only about 30 minutes out of Amsterdam's city center, mind, and about 10 minutes away from my house. On bike, that is :-] I may live in boring suburbia, but I like it. So there.

And of course I had to take some pictures of Himself. He couldn't quite figure out how the skaters managed to float over ice, and was quite alert because of that. The low sun and frost made for some really nice pictures.

3FM Serious Request

So 3FM Serious Request hit the country again. A race for charity where 3 DJs get locked up in a glass house for a week or so, presenting their show from it. Meanwhile, there's auctions, songs request and all kinds of stuff going on around it. With this, they try to draw attention to whatever good cause catches their fancy. Last year there was a huge rally against landmines, and this year the focus is on water.

At work, someone started a bit of an auction themselves, where everyone can suggest a record, but has to put their money where their mouth is. The song that gets most votes becomes the official request and gets sent on to the 3FM studio.

Our current count is roughly 2000 euros already! I just suggested U2's - Walk to the Water, because it's so fitting. It was hard to decide though... Bowie's "Looking for Water" was high up on my list too, as well as No Pussy Blues, but that was just because it would rock so much to hear that song being played on the radio.

Of Montreal

I went to see Of Montreal a couple of nights ago and made a couple of pictures. These guys play fairly big venues in the US, or so I've been told, but over here, they played Paradiso's small upstairs room, while Marillion played downstairs. I rather enjoyed them, and they're great for shooting pictures at. First time I shot in RAW mode, but I didn't spent enough time at processing the pictures properly... My computer is just too slow. I think I need a Mac ;)

Travels

Amsterdam - Gent during rushour: 4 hours
Gent Amsterdam at midnight: 2 hours.

Yawn. Tired, but a good night, even if the traffic was a nightmare. A very different performance of what I have seen up to now, but interesting. My Shakespeare is really, really bad, but I'm now curious and want to explore more. Of course, this can only mean I haven't come to grips yet with the concept of not being able to do everything in one life. ;) I figured I have, rationally, just not emotionally.

Great to see the gang again. Feeling a little awkward and a little intrusive cuse of the scary groupies, which kind of makes me feel like a scary groupie too. I don't think I'm really scary, or a groupie for that matter.Maybe just a little scary at times, but never intentionally. It's more not being able to find a mask or behaviour that fits the situation.

Having said that, I suspect I'm just tired and not making a lot of sense.

Almost weekend, yay. I need sleep.
