Tonight I went up to Patronaat in Haarlem to see Joan play. For some reason all her previous gigs were jinxed, so it was nice to finally get to see her without anything going horrendously wrong. The Patronaat has been rebuilt quite well, and sound and light are pretty good in the place. The concert itself was pretty good. For some reason I seem to have been going to a lot of those very fragile sounding (yet powerful) female performers lately, which is surprising. Surprising in that I always thought my preference in music leaned more towards heavy male voices. But tonight was Joan's night and she didn't disappoint. She's not only easy on the eyes, but her voice is simply stunning and she has a great sense of humour, laughs a lot on stage and randomly bursts out in pretty far fetched anecdotes that brings a smile on the face of even the most grumy person in the audience. A little plus was that she played Bowie's Sweet Thing, which of course put a smile on my face. She even referenced the 1984 thing! Between Joan playing Sweet Thing and the Killers playing When You Rock And Roll with me, I sure got my Bowie fix this week. Lucky me. Only a couple of more months before I get to see the man himself again.
All in all a fun and entertaining night. More pictures are up on my flickr page, where I incidentally found a message of someone who wants to use some of my Killers pictures for some cultural website thingie asked me if I was interested in taking pictures at more concerts for them. How cool is that?
I think I just outshone myself when it comes to stupidity.
I know I bought a ticket to see Joan As Police Woman in Patronaat somewhere before I went to Dublin. I distinctly remeber spelling out the name to the girl behind the counter in the post office, and feeling like a right plonker doing so. I also remember the total amount was, like, 16 euro or something...
...the only thing I can't remember is where I put the damn thing.
I found my Cat Power ticket this morning and just bought a Nina Nastasia ticket at the post office, but had the worst deja vu feeling about the JAPW ticket.
So where the fuck is it?
On a different note altogether. The Nina Nastasia ticket came to EUR8,65 including service charges. Now that's a great price. Girl at the post office said I was lucky, because it was almost sold out. Not surprising, considering the price and the little place in the Paradiso only holds about 150 people.
Oh, wow. Just checked the Paradiso site, and guess what... The Drones are playing this coming tuesday at the little place in the Paradiso too. I'd been meaning to check them out and way hey, going to the gig is actually cheaper than buying the cd. Nuts. Will have to leg it, since I'll be coming straight in from Leeuwarden though. Then Teddy Thompson is playing the Paradiso Nov 1 & 2 supporting Lucinda Williams. Wouldn't mind seeing him, but I can't be bothered with Lucinda Williams, really. And god, MC5 on December 5. I know for fact that some of those are actually dead, so what's the story? I may check them out just for kicks. Sadly, Razorlight on December 6 is sold out.
Oooh... and Kashmir November 8 in the Melkweg.
Why on earth did everyone collectively decide on November to tour?
AND WHERE IS MY JAPW TICKET? Damnit.
So Stuart sent me an invite for Vox, just when I was toying with the idea of starting up a new site again. I used to... once, a long time ago on a domain called kiasyd.com. I then kind of got frustrated with it all, so there's a big chance I will again. Maybe I never really was a writer, or felt intimidated by the thought of who will all read this. I don't really know why I quit, but alas, I did.
And here we are, a brand new page, and the first thing that annoys me is that you're stuck with the predefined designs. I'd love to be able to edit the templates and just whack my own stuff in.
Other than that... it's neat. Way neat. It would certainly save a lot of hassle from starting up from scratch again.
All this means one thing first and foremost: I did fuck all in work. Well there's a change there. It's funny how in my job one moment you go completely insane from work pressure, and the next, it's like there's so little work that even surfing gets boring after a while (no, really!). Vox is a welcome new distraction, the invitation to which came just at a point where I really had checked all the mail I'll ever get about a hundred times already (and most of it is spam). I had written an entry for my blog elsewhere and had spent some time browsing through concerts and updating my "Gigs to go to" list.
Well then, the first gig to go to would be Joan as Police Woman's gig in the Paradiso. Stuart has been raving about her, but of course, I saw her first. Ha. I saw her back when she was doing background vocals for Mister Rufus Wainwright and later supported him as well. I also saw her on a strange night in Cologne, where I had dragged a friend to her first Rufus Wainwright gig. Surrounded by broken english speaken Germans, I suddenly found myself to be the heckler in the audience, not a position I usually take (cause I'm too self conscious to raise my voice). Anyway, my friend and me know eachother through David Bowie's site, concerts and whatnot and it basically made our night when she started up Bowie's Sweet Thing and wailed along loudly to lots of funny looks from the surrounding people.
After the gig, we hung around cause I wanted to be a real groupie and stalk Rufus. But then Joan walked out with the guitar player and we started talking. She was very very nice and pretty entertaining. Never knew she used to be Buckley's girlfriend... Whaddya know. Well, to make a long story short, we had fun talking to her, but never got to say hi to Rufus.
Drifting massively there. What I was going to say is that I wanted to buy a ticket for her gig in Paradiso, but has been postponing it because the weather has been so bad lately and the walk to the post office would have melted me.
Today, I found out the gig had sold out.
Like. WTF?
But I found a solution in Calexico. They're the band playing the big(ger) stage in Paradiso that very same night at 8:30, whereas Joan is on at 10 on the smaller stage. Having seen gigs at the Paradiso before, I know you're perfectly free to move between stages all you like on tickets for the bigger stage. So I went a Calexico ticket instead, a band I'd been meaning to check out anyway. So there you go... aren't I clever?
