I just went to my first day of the Crossing Border Festival in The
Hague, where Rufus was being interviewed by this Belgian rock journo. I
thought the rock journo was a little weak and lost a lot of
opportunities to go really in depth but c'est ca.

Rufus played the Heineken Music Hall last night, but I didn't go, because the sheer size of the venue seemed a little off for a Rufus gig.
This was a nice little treat instead, but it could have been so much
better with a different interviewer. The interview Gavin did a couple of years back with John Kelly comes to mind.

I love taking concert pictures. More or less
started back in 97 during U2 gigs, with a not so great point and click
camera, which had a decent zoom for that kind of time. I upgraded to a
Canon EOS300 (the analogue kind) a couple of years after, and but the
cost of film bled me dry. July 2005 I splurged out and went digital
with an EOS350. Cost me a small fortune, but it's paid back for itself
a thousand fold taking the cost of film into account. I'd like to get a
more robust/professional body and a couple of lenses, but I'd probably
need to invest a couple of grand to get where I really want. A good
photo course wouldn't go amiss either. Despite all that, I do get the
occassional "lucky shot" though. I really should do something
interesting with all these, but for some reason, that never really
happened.

So Stuart sent me an invite for Vox, just when I was toying with the idea of starting up a new site again. I used to... once, a long time ago on a domain called kiasyd.com. I then kind of got frustrated with it all, so there's a big chance I will again. Maybe I never really was a writer, or felt intimidated by the thought of who will all read this. I don't really know why I quit, but alas, I did.

And here we are, a brand new page, and the first thing that annoys me is that you're stuck with the predefined designs. I'd love to be able to edit the templates and just whack my own stuff in.

Other than that... it's neat. Way neat. It would certainly save a lot of hassle from starting up from scratch again.

All this means one thing first and foremost: I did fuck all in work. Well there's a change there. It's funny how in my job one moment you go completely insane from work pressure, and the next, it's like there's so little work that even surfing gets boring after a while (no, really!). Vox is a welcome new distraction, the invitation to which came just at a point where I really had checked all the mail I'll ever get about a hundred times already (and most of it is spam). I had written an entry for my blog elsewhere and had spent some time browsing through concerts and updating my "Gigs to go to" list.

Well then, the first gig to go to would be Joan as Police Woman's gig in the Paradiso. Stuart has been raving about her, but of course, I saw her first. Ha. I saw her back when she was doing background vocals for Mister Rufus Wainwright and later supported him as well. I also saw her on a strange night in Cologne, where I had dragged a friend to her first Rufus Wainwright gig. Surrounded by broken english speaken Germans, I suddenly found myself to be the heckler in the audience, not a position I usually take (cause I'm too self conscious to raise my voice). Anyway, my friend and me know eachother through David Bowie's site, concerts and whatnot and it basically made our night when she started up Bowie's Sweet Thing and wailed along loudly to lots of funny looks from the surrounding people.

After the gig, we hung around cause I wanted to be a real groupie and stalk Rufus. But then Joan walked out with the guitar player and we started talking. She was very very nice and pretty entertaining. Never knew she used to be Buckley's girlfriend... Whaddya know. Well, to make a long story short, we had fun talking to her, but never got to say hi to Rufus.

Drifting massively there. What I was going to say is that I wanted to buy a ticket for her gig in Paradiso, but has been postponing it because the weather has been so bad lately and the walk to the post office would have melted me.

Today, I found out the gig had sold out.

Like. WTF?

But I found a solution in Calexico. They're the band playing the big(ger) stage in Paradiso that very same night at 8:30, whereas Joan is on at 10 on the smaller stage. Having seen gigs at the Paradiso before, I know you're perfectly free to move between stages all you like on tickets for the bigger stage. So I went a Calexico ticket instead, a band I'd been meaning to check out anyway. So there you go... aren't I clever?

Anyway, the 2006 gig list so far:

Thu, Aug 10 Bauhaus, Tivoli, Utrecht
Sun, Aug 13 Calexico/Joan As Police Woman, Paradiso, Amsterdam
Mon, Aug 14 Joan As Police Woman, Ekko, Utrecht
Sat, Aug 19 Joan As Police Woman, Nighttown, Rotterdam

Mon, Sep 18 Nick Cave, The Hague
Tue, Sep 19 Nick Cave, The Hague
Wed, Sep 20 Nick Cave, Rex, Paris
Sun, Sep 24 Nick Cave, Antwerp
Mon, Sep 25 Nick Cave, Antwerp
Tue, Sep 26 Nick Cave, Luxemburg

Wed, Oct 04 Came So Far For Beauty, Point Depot, Dublin
Thu, Oct 05 Came So Far For Beauty, Point Depot, Dublin

Fri, Nov 03 Cat Power, Paradiso, Amsterdam

I'm such a loser :-]

Anyway, back to tying it flickr piccies it is.
