After I posted my last post last night, I fully expected to crash and burn. I couldn't have been more wrong. The Canadians and Americans rounded up a bunch of us to walk up to the Sacre Coeur, with strangely enough, U2 playing from some random cafe. So off we went, wandering around the little cobblestoned streets, up the stairs, until we were sat right on the steps outside the Cathedral, overlooking Paris. Some weird conversations started erupting. The Canadian all female couple (of sorts, I didn't ask specifics) got chatting to some French guys. The American and Australian girls got talking amongst themselves about spiritualism and idealism which was kind of cute in a naive way. It made me realise I probably have a few years on them and I started wondering whether I had lost that certain sense of innocence, or whether I never had it at all. Then there's the guy from Seattle, teaching english in German, who ended up talking to a couple of French guys there, who didn't speak a word of English. This didn't seem to bother him in the least... instead, he started teaching them english as well. Last but not least... the American 18 year old boy, who keeps talking about his ex girlfriend and whatnot... However, he's really striking me as the kind of boy that really prefers boys over girls. But hey, I wasn't going to tell him that...
We finally made it back to the hostel at 2:30, way past the curfew. The two Canadian girls wanted to get up at 7, because they're going to London for a day or so, trying to get everyone to come along with them. Didn't particularly feel like shelling out EUR120 on the Eurostar just to go to London for a day though.
This morning I spent in the Louvre for a while, doing a rush job of it. The Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo rooms were absolutely jammed with smelly people, taking the enjoyment out of it for me. A for the 17th, 18th century French and Italian art... I don't know, really. I have often suspected that it's not really my genre, and now I'm sure. This doesn't go for the statues though. I absolutely adore them. Even more than that though, I enjoyed the ancient BC arts. The mosaics especially and all the mythological figures. I suppose I did finally find out my classical time in school was good for something. I simply like the myths these figures are resembling, or recognising a deity in them, by far more than all the religiously themed arts.
I wandered off into the Jardin de Tuillieres and lay down on the grass a little, dozing. Back in the hostel now, getting ready to go see Joan. There's free Wi-fi here which I have been abusing over the past couple of days. Very nice. I do think the laptop is kind of running out of juice at this stage though.
Typical is that I don't have my camera on me, so I won't be taking any
pictures of Joan (or anything else for that matter). I'm toying with
the idea of going to see the Eiffel Tower tomorrow, which I've been
putting off because I'm afraid of heights.
